BHS and NRT introduce Max-AI™ technology and its first unit, the Autonomous QC, with Sadako AI inside.

Max-AI™ technology is an artificial intelligence system that identifies recyclables and other items for recovery. Through deep learning technology, Max-AI employs multi-layered neural networks, along with a vision system, to see and identify objects similar to the way a person does. The first available machine utilizing Max-AI technology is online in a quality control (QC) role. The Autonomous QC sorts container streams following NRT optical sorting. The unit uses its vision system to see the material, its artificial intelligence to think and identify each item, and a robot to pick targeted items. This system is able to make multiple sorting decisions autonomously, for example separately recovering thermoform trays, aluminum, and mixed plastics while removing residue from a stream of PET bottles. All of this is done at rates exceeding human capabilities.
The first commercial Max-AI Autonomous QC is operational at Athens Services’ advanced Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Sun Valley, California providing quality control of their Polyethylene Terepthalate (PET) material stream during the plant’s two daily shifts.
