difference is the final turbidity of the
treated water, around 20-30 NTU in
the case of precipitation floatation
and 1-5 NTU in ionic floatation. This
difference is explained by the fact
that it is impossible to float all metal
hydroxides with the former technique,
while with ionic floatation, the
minimum solubility of the metal is not
reached. This will determine the need
of a subsequent filtration step. The
floatation techniques studied have
competitive advantages, which include
a reduction in the volume of chemical
reagents used in treatment, and the
selective separation of metals present
in the water. This would give rise to an
additional reduction in costs and an
increase in the overall sustainability of
the process.
