ACCIONA Agua completes the works for Africa’s largest water treatment plant

ACCIONA Agua, in a consortium with the German group Passavant Energy and Environment, and the Egyptian company Hassan Allam Construction, has completed the works to expand the Gabal Al Asfar waste water treatment plant on the outskirts of Cairo (Egypt).

The contract, awarded by Egypt’s Construction Authority for Potable Water and Wastewater (CAPW) has a budget of more than €120 million and includes the design, construction and commissioning of the plant, as well as its operation and maintenance for a two year period.

The project involves enlarging the plant’s treatment capacity by 500,000 m3 of water per day to meet the demand from the eastern part of the Egyptian capital, equivalent to around 8 million people.

The commissioning of this new facility will give the Gabal Al Asfar complex a total treatment capacity of 2.5 million m³ per day, making it the largest water treatment complex in Africa and the Middle East, and the third largest in the world.
