The Spanish Metrology Centre (CEM) and the publicly-owned company Canal de Isabel II have signed a collaboration agreement to promote metrology in the field of water meters, to work together and to make Canal de Isabel II’s unique facilities available for this activity.
The agreement was signed by the director of the Spanish Metrology Centre, José Manuel Bernabé, and the executive vice-president of Canal de Isabel II, Rafael Prieto.
Under the agreement, CEM and Canal de Isabel II will work together on carrying out and improving metrological activity in the field of water meters. Canal de Isabel II’s Water Meter Laboratory is accredited by ENAC and does research into metrological aspects of water flows. With the signing of this agreement, the publicly owned company becomes a national leader in traceability in this field and will participate, along with CEM, in international initiatives on flow meter testing.
CEM is an independent agency of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism through the Secretary-General of Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism. It is Spain’s Administrative Cooperation Agency for the field of legal metrology and leads the promotion and development of the Spanish National Metrology System and good practices by those involved in it. It oversees excellence in national standards and reference materials and updating them to match the current state of science and technology, promotes the training of metrology specialists and ensures the correct use of measurement systems and the International System of Units in society.
Canal de Isabel II is the publicly owned company that manages the integrated water cycle in the Madrid Region. It was founded almost 170 years ago to supply water to the city of Madrid and today it employs over 2800 people who work every day to serve more than 6 million people in the region. It is an innovative company, a leader in its sector and recognised worldwide for its management of all phases of the integrated water cycle: capture, adduction, treatment, distribution, sanitation, purification and reuse.
It operates 13 reservoirs; 78 groundwater catchments; 17,601 km of water supply and distribution network; 131 drinking water and 133 wastewater pumping stations; 15,083 km of sewage networks; 65 storm tanks; 157 wastewater treatment plants; and 615 km of reclaimed water network.
