RECYCLIA, A MODEL OF PROVEN EFFICIENCY AND RESPONSIBILITY

Recyclia, the entity which manages the Ecoasimelec, Ecofimática and Ecopilas foundations, was created in April 2012 to avail of synergies and combine the experience and knowledge accumulated over two decades in the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and battery recycling sector.

Since then, Recyclia has been offering producers of all types domestic and professional electrical and electronic equipment and batteries a comprehensive collection and recycling service for all categories of waste set out in in Spanish and EU legislation. This includes the “newest” waste types, such as photovoltaic panels, electric and hybrid vehicle batteries and toner and ink cartridges.

Ecoasimelec, Ecofimática and Ecopilas were pioneers in the field of Extended Producer Responsibility Collective Schemes (EPRCS), when producers voluntarily decided to take responsibility for the organisation and financing of the collection and recycling of the equipment and batteries they placed on the market at the end of their service life prior to the first EU Directives of 2002 and 2006.

Since then, Recyclia has become the waste management organisation with the highest number of registered manufacturers and importers of electronic devices and batteries, a total of 1,684 in 2020.

The latest available figures indicate that Recyclia managed 59,154 tonnes of WEEE and end-of-life batteries in 2020, thus withstanding the general slowdown arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. Electronic equipment accounted for 51,839 tonnes of the total, enabling the organisation to achieve the target it set itself when the pandemic was declared, i.e., to strive to keep the volume of this waste above 50,000 tonnes following the all-time high of 57,520 tonnes achieved in 2019. Since its creation, Recyclia has managed 415,720 tonnes of this type of waste.

A new record was set for the management of batteries and accumulators, with 7,315 tonnes of this waste being collected from the domestic, industrial and automotive sectors through the Ecopilas foundation. Ecopilas, which has managed more than 43,600 tonnes of batteries since it first went into operation, now ranks fifth among European EPR schemes in the management of this waste, according to Eucobat data.

Recyclia also has the most extensive collection network in Spain, bringing recycling closer to the consumer with the deployment of more than 91,700 collection points throughout the country.
