EucoLight, a new European association specialising  in Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in the lighting sector has just been set up. EucoLight has been created to give a voice to WEEE Extended Producer Responsibility compliance schemes that specialise in managing the collection and recycling of lamps and luminaires.

The WEEE Directive, as recast, has greater impact on lighting than on any other industry sector.  Despite being a low-weight product, more lamps are collected and recycled in Europe than all other types of electrical equipment.  Furthermore, unlike most other WEEE ítems, there is no value associated with waste lamps. In addition, most lamps are fragile and hazardous (making them difficult to transport) and require specialist recycling facilities.

The Brussels-based EucoLight association has been established to respond positively to these challenges and to engage effectively with other European bodies and trade associations. EucoLight will work to enhance the regulatory framework for lighting waste and to foster a level playing field. It will also promote the development of appropriate international standards, and provide guidance and support to its members.

EucoLight membership is open to any non-profit WEEE compliance scheme fulfilling the Extended Producer Responsibility of lighting producers and established in Europe. Members include WEEE schemes from a total of 16 different EU Member States.
