Iran has the highest planned methanol capacity additions globally with 30 million tonnes per year (mtpa) between 2018 and 2022, followed by the US and China with 12 mtpa and 10 mtpa respectively, according to GlobalData.
Presently, Iran accounts for 54 percent of the total global planned methanol capacity additions in 2022. The country has 21 planned methanol plants. Among these, Kaveh Methanol Company Dayyer Methanol Plant has the highest capacity with 2.3 mtpa. There are also 13 planned plants with the second highest capacity in the country. Each of these plants have a capacity of 1.7 mtpa. Some of these plants include Sabalan Petrochemical Company Assaluyeh Methanol Plant, Siraf Energy Petrochemical Dayyer Methanol Plant and Sepehr Balochestan Chabahar Methanol Plant.
The US has 22 percent share in the global planned methanol capacity additions in 2022. The country has six planned methanol plants. The top planned plants in terms of capacity are NW Innovation Works St. Helens Methanol Plant and NW Innovation Works Kalama Methanol Plant, each with a capacity of 3.6 mtpa. Yuhuang Chemical St. James Parish Methanol Plant and Natgasoline Beaumont Methanol Plant are in second, each with a capacity of 1.8 mtpa.
China is expected to contribute about 18 percent to the total global planned methanol capacity additions in 2022. The country has 10 planned methanol plants. CPI Total Ordos Methanol Plant leads with a capacity of 2.0 mtpa. Angola Joint Coal Chemical Huainan Methanol Plant, Shanxi Coking Company Hongtong Methanol Plant and China Coal Shaanxi Yulin Energy & Chemical Company are jointly in second, each with a capacity of 1.8 mtpa.
Trinidad and Tobago and Algeria are jointly in fourth, each with a planned capacity of 1 mtpa, contributing about 4 percent of the total global planned methanol capacity additions in 2022. Caribbean Gas Chemical La Brea Methanol Plant is the only planned plant in Trinidad and Tobago with a capacity of 1 mtpa. Algeria also has one planned methanol plant, Sonalmeth Arzew Methanol Plant, with a capacity of 1 mtpa.
