There is currently extensive growth in the use of plastics in all sectors of their application. After they are used, plastic materials and products become waste, which in turn is a very valuable resource. This resource should be availed of to the utmost, from an environmental as well as from an economic point of view. It is therefore necessary to recover it
Recovery consists of taking waste and converting it into value, in the form of materials or energy. In the case of plastics, such recovery is possible and although there is a growing trend towards availing a great deal of plastic waste is disposed of in landfills and is therefore not recovered. In this respect, the Spanish Waste and Contaminated Land Act 22/2011, of the 28th of July, sets out the following waste hierarchy:
- Preparation for reuse.
- Energy recovery.
