Madrid City Council, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Ecovidrio will renovate a municipal basketball court in the Parque de Atenas, a public park located in central Madrid. The materials used to resurface the court will come from recycled glass containers, which will undergo an innovative and pioneering processing technique.
To publicise the initiative and enable Madrid residents to participate, 40 containers with the shape of giant basketballs have been deployed and the campaign features the slogan “Be the most valuable player in recycling”. The glass containers collected will be recycled to enable the material needed to resurface the court to be extracted. It is estimated that 22,000 kilos of glass will be required to undertake the renovation work. The new court will feature a design created by the NBA, within the framework of an agreement whereby Ecovidrio will become an Official Sustainability Partner of the NBA in Spain.
“Glass recycling is now a consolidated reality in our city and is growing every day, thanks to the commitment of citizens”, points out the City Council’s delegate for the Environment and Mobility, Inés Sabanés. “The residents of Madrid are recycling more waste in general, and glass in particular, and they are doing so more efficiently. Through this initiative, we expect to make further progress in this area and continue making Madrid more sustainable and more committed to the environment”.
The recycled glass court is expected to be completed by March of this year.
