Littering in natural spaces is a serious environmental problem that affects the conservation of the planet. The LIBERA project, created by SEO/Birdlife in alliance with Ecoembes, has been working for two and a half years to keep natural spaces free of litter and raise awareness amongst citizens of the negative impact of litter in nature on the environment.
The ADESP wanted to lend its support to this struggle and entered into a cooperation agreement with LIBERA. As a result, LIBERA will train volunteers so that they can raise awareness of the importance of recycling and the issue of litter in natural spaces to attendees of sports event organised by ten federations belonging to the ADESP. These ‘Ecovolunteers’ will receive a training course in environmental issues and will avail of the sports competitions organised by the different federations to inform the public about the project and raise awareness of the problem of litter in nature. With the diploma that accredits them as ‘Ecovolunteers’ and a pack of materials provided to them, they will make sports lovers aware of the importance of implementing the ‘3 Rs’, reduce, reuse and recycle, in their daily consumption routines as well as at sports events.
Those interested in becoming ‘Ecovolunteers’ can receive the necessary training and accreditation online prior to raising awareness amongst those attending the sports competitions organised by the Spanish federations of Handball, Canoeing, Mountain Sports and Climbing, Subaquatic Activities, Fishing and Surf Fishing, Volleyball and Tennis, amongst others.
Support of top sportspeople
The cooperation agreement also envisages the participation of ‘Ecoambassadors’, top sportspeople from different disciplines, to raise awareness of the problem of litter in nature. Through their own personal social media accounts or through those of the ADESP, these sportspeople will highlight the actions been taken to combat littering.
